WIKIPEDIA / KILIMS ARE FLAT TAPESTRY-WOVEN CARPETS OR RUGS PRODUCED FROM THE BALKANS TO PAKISTAN. KILIMS CAN BE PURELY DECORATIVE OR CAN FUNCTION AS PRAYER RUGS. KILIMS ARE PRODUCED BY TIGHTLY INTERWEAVING THE WARP AND WEFT STRANDS OF THE WEAVE TO PRODUCE A FLAT SURFACE WITH NO PILE.
IN THE WORDS OF THE ARTIST: “MY TENUOUS YET DEEP-ROOTED CONNECTION WITH THE BAKHTIARI TRIBE MOTIVATES ME TO SUPPORT THIS DYING CRAFT, AND I DRAW INSPIRATION FROM THEIR UNIQUE ARTISTIC LEGACY. MULTI-FUNCTIONAL TRIBAL FLATWEAVES WERE PRODUCED TO DECORATE AND TO COVER. DEVOID OF ANY ARTISTIC REFERENCE SAVE THE BEAUTY OF THE NATURAL WORLD, THE KILIMS WERE TRUE RAW EXPRESSIONS OF A TRIBE’S OUTLOOK ON BEAUTY. WITH THE DEMISE OF TRIBAL LIFE, THAT TYPE OF ART HAS DIED. WHAT HAS NOT IS THE TECHNIQUE, AND I BELIEVE THE SURVIVAL OF THIS CRAFT GOES THROUGH REINVENTION.”
THREE FACTORS ARE OFTEN NOTED TO EXPLAIN THE DEMISE OF KILIM WEAVING FROM THE BALKANS TO PAKISTAN: THE INTRODUCTION OF CHEMICAL DYES, WHICH DO NOT RENDER THE NATURAL SHEENS AND HUES OF NATURAL DYES; THE LOSS OF THE NOMADIC WAY OF LIFE AND THE RISE OF CHEAPER, MACHINE-MADE KILIM WEAVES. TWP RE-INTRODUCES THE KILIM BY WORKING WITH SEMI-NOMADIC TRIBAL WOMEN OF NORTHERN IRAN AND BY UTILISING ONLY PLANT-DYED, ORGANIC HANDSPUN SHEEPSWOOL. TWP ALSO WORKS ON THE CONCEPT THAT IN ORDER TO SURVIVE, A CRAFT MUST BE RE-INVENTED HAND IN HAND WITH THE TRADITIONAL MAKERS OF THAT CRAFT.
RE-INVENTION, WITHIN THE TRIBAL WEAVE PROJECT, MEANS PHYSICAL TRANSFORMATION: THE KILIM WEAVE IS EITHER STRIPPED DOWN TO REVEAL ITS UNDERLYING WARP OR MODIFIED IN TEXTURE WITH NEW LACE-LIKE WEAVE. IN A SPECIAL SERIES ENTITLED “METALLICS” AND INSPIRED BY TRIBAL BAKHTIARI WOVEN SADDLE BLANKETS AND SALT HOLDERS, THREADS OF POLYURETHANE HAVE BEEN INTERTWINED WITH TRADITIONAL BLACK SHEEPWOOL FOR A GLOSSY, POP-ART EFFECT. RE-INVENTION ALSO COMES THROUGH ZOOMING IN ON THE GEOMETRICAL SHAPES ESSENTIAL TO KILIM IN ORDER TO ENHANCE THE DESIGN ITSELF BUT ALSO THE NOVELTY OF THE WEAVE AND THE MIX OF MATERIALS
