WIKIPEDIA / GABBEH CARPETS ARE A TRADITIONAL VARIETY OF PERSIAN CARPET VERY MUCH ASSOCIATED TO THE BAKHTIARI TRIBE OF IRAN, TO WHICH THE ARTIST BELONGS. A GABBEH IS A HAND-WOVEN PILE RUG OF COARSE QUALITY AND MEDIUM SIZE CHARACTERIZED BY AN ABSTRACT DESIGN THAT RELIES UPON OPEN FIELDS OF COLOR AND A PLAYFULNESS WITH GEOMETRY. THE GABBEH IS USUALLY CRAFTED BY WOMEN. GABBEH CARPETS ARE MUCH THICKER AND COARSER THAN OTHER PERSIAN CARPETS; SOMETIMES IT IS AS MUCH AS ONE INCH IN DEPTH. IN FACT, IT IS MORE OF A VARIETY OF KILIM THAN CARPET. THE WORD “GABBEH” COMES FROM THE PERSIAN MEANING RAW, NATURAL, UNCUT. THIS IS A ROUGH AND PRIMITIVE CARPET. GABBEH PATTERNS ARE OF A VERY BASIC KIND WITH ONLY A LIMITED NUMBER OF DECORATIVE, MOSTLY RECTANGULAR OBJECTS RESEMBLING MAINLY ANIMALS. IN GABBEH USUALLY BRIGHT COLORS, SUCH AS YELLOW AND RED, ARE USED.
OF ALL THE PERSIAN CARPETS, GABBEHS WITH THEIR SOFT BUSHY PILE AND NAIVE ANIMAL DESIGNS, ARE THE MOST RUDIMENTARY. GABBEHS IS ALSO A CRAFT SPECIFIC TO THE ARTIST’S OWN TRIBAL HERITAGE. THE GABBEHS OF THE TRIBAL WEAVE PROJECT UNDERGO A RE-MAKE VERY SIMILAR TO THE KILIMS.
IN THIS SERIES, ASAD-BAKHTIARI PLAYS WITH PILES OF MULTIPLE ELEVATION AND WITH INTERLACING GABBEH WEAVE WITH KILIM AND LACE-LIKE WEAVES, CONFERRING GABBEH A NEW TEXTURE AND NEW LOOK. “KHERSAK” (BEAR CUB) IS A SERIES OF MIXED GABBEH AND KILIM THAT CONTRASTS THE THICK GABBEH WEAVE AGAINST THE FRAGILE PILE OF THE KILIM THREADS. THE ARTIST ALSO INTRODUCES A BOLDER TAKE ON CLASSIC GABBEH PATTERNS, SATURATING EACH PIECE WITH BLOCK COLORS AND SINGLE-SHAPE DESIGN.
